Last week, six of the school's top mathematicians joined forces in hope of winning this year's Pythagoras Quest. IESL are no strangers to this competition, coming first last year meant they went on to represent the school at the national finals in Malmö. This year, IESL teams were up against 10 others from Östergötland's Län, all with their eyes on gold.
In order to win, students had to work co-operatively in teams on a two hour maths paper. The team with the highest mark, gained the title. We proudly had two teams representing Engelska Skolan and considering our track record, we had high hopes of a podium finish.
Before the competition, students were feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement. Yet when the test began, they were calm, collected and focused on the task, working diligently through the 12 demanding questions.
After what seemed like an eternity, the results were announced. Three teams had been placed in joint second position, including one from Engelska Skolan. It was down to the tie break question to decide the rankings, which put us into 3rd place. A huge congratulations to our bronze medal team for this score and all our mathematicians for representing the school. In preparing for this the students showed great dedication, hard work and effort. Many other IES schools were also represented in this year’s regional championships. We wish the best of luck to our schools in Nacka, Uppsala and Sundsvall who all earned first place and are going on to the Swedish Finals.
